Hi
Judy.
My twin
sister received your e-mail and forwarded it to me since I was the one
with a long-term and close friendship with your son. Before I start I
want to say that I miss your son a great deal but I want you to read
happy thoughts about Jascha and want to keep this note upbeat. You might
remember me if I fill you in. I met Jascha on our trip to Israel in
1989. He and I dated a bit but primarily became inseparable friends. We
kept in touch and Sophomore year of college I came from Tulane in New
Orleans to visit him at school. You and your husband took us out for
Chinese food and that is the only time I met you.
Jascha
and I kept in touch, he came to New Orleans for Mardi Gras. Junior year
I was in Jerusalem when Jascha was in Tel Aviv. We saw each other a few
times and continued to keep in touch. After college we became the closet
we ever were. We spoke on the phone for hours (yes, hours!) a night from
about 1994-1996. Our friendship was altered when I met my boyfriend
since there were unresolved feelings between Jascha and I and after a
few months we stopped speaking. It was kind of awkward but that was what
happened. I always wanted to get back in touch and at one point
(December 1998) I saw Jascha and his brother over New Years in Los
Angeles (we had sushi with a bunch of friends).
Anyway,
what I am trying to say is that Jascha was one of the most important
people in my life for a period of ten years and I was devastated to hear
about him. I don't know if you knew about me -- something tells me
Jascha didn't tell you why his phone bills were so high or that he had
this odd but wonderful friendship. It is not really the kind of thing
you tell your parents. My parents know who your son was and that
we were great friends but I never gave them the whole story so I assume
you didn't get it either. I hate to leave it at that- I am a high school
teacher and need to get to class in a few minutes- but I will write you
more soon and tell you more of the many awesome things I know about your
son. All my best- Kim Donfeld
